The Story Behind

The story behind an object is just as important as the object itself. Knowing this narrative can bring people closer to the object and have a more powerful impact in their lives. In this project I've been looking into making a piece of furniture that can be easily slotted together alongside a catalogue of the story of the object before they receive it.

Making initial drawings and prototypes to find a stylish shape and from to my idea. Using 3D printing and foam to create quick and simple prototypes. Moving onto using metal wire and wood to get a further idea development.

Making some full scale prototypes get an idea so size and if my idea can function on this scale. Seeing which design works best structure works best. from doing this I learnt a lot about structural shapes and stability in furniture from doing this.

Testing out how the chair will slot together, easily, quickly and be able to withstand the weight of someone sitting on it. This took a lot of experiments from researching into structural shapes and seeing where I can add them into my designs.

This is my first full size prototype. Here I found that it was very wobbly as there wasn't any triangles or structural supports, so I had to make some adjustments to the next one.  I also had a few to the wooden seats as they weren't very comfy either.

After learning from my first prototype, I had stop it from wobbling so I decided to bring in the back to add more triangles. I also moved the slots under the seat to further add to the structure.

Sourcing the wood from a local supplier for the final outcome.

Putting in the slots to secure the back of the chair so that it doesn't wobble anymore and so that it is easy to fit together.

Sanding and planing the wooded tops to make a smoother surface sit on.

Instructions to fit together.

The Final Design with the Story Behind Album as well.

For the final design I have used steel metal rods bent into strong but stylish shape, I also have coated the steel with a black metal finish. I used oak as the seats to keep the strength and it looks good with the black steel. it come with a photo album showing the process of how I made it so that the user can see this side of the chairs story. Knowing this narrative will make the user feel closer to the chair and expanding their relationship to it.
