Illumination
For my Illumination project I was making a battery powered light based on weathered and abandoned materials. Researching and experimenting with how to make materials look weathered and forgotten. Using the industrial material, concrete, as I thought it could be related to abandoned building and old weathered places. Using the light to emphasis the cracks and rusted parts to the light. Using a wooden base for a nice contrast between the materials, displaying the weathered material.
Process
I started by using a cylinder mould to get the outside shape of the lamp. I measured out the concrete at a 2:1 ratio, so two cups of concrete to one cup of water. I then mixed it up and patted it down into the edges and up around the mould. My first test I left over night and it slumped down into the middle of the mould. I also tried patting the concrete around the exterior of the mould but this ended up being uneven and ascetically not very nice. I also tried this process using chicken wire to at strength but ended up breaking. Trying all these processes really helped me get familiar with the material and understand how it worked.
My last test I did the same process as my first test but I added the chicken wire to it and I worked very well.
To get the light to emit though the concrete I got a hammer and gently smashed holes into the so that the light can come through.
Experimenting with coloured light to see the different effects. finding out how the light can make more emphasis on the broken concrete.
For my final design I kept the blue light as the inside light as I thought it put more emphasis on the broken parts of the concrete. I put onto a found piece of wood that I cleaned up to display the concrete. The rusted chicken wire bringing out the industrial and forgotten look
