Material Wonders

with The Holburne Museum

Materials Wonders is the commission gave to in response to the souvenir project. We wanted to teach people about the materials in the Holburne Museum with samples discs in a cylinder box that people can pick up and feel the materials, letting them physically feel the materials found in the museum.

We wanted to contain these materials in a cylinder box so that the materials could be kept inside. We first wanted to have a Bath Stone as the box as that is the material the museum is made from. Then started by turning some plaster so we could take a mould from it. However, as we wanted to hollow out the inside, we were unable to safely get all the way down. We also tired making the mould from existing objects and poured the stone into it but that also didn't work. To make this process easier but have the same effect we decided wood and lathe the cylinder then drill the hole down the middle. This made the box a lot lighter nicer to hold.

For the materials inside the box, we wanted to be thin discs that would be hung from the lid of the box so they lifted out as you picked it up. Exposing the materials so that people can feel the texture of the materials, understanding how the artefacts in the museum feel.

I lathed the lids to size so that they would slot in the box and stay in, making a small slant so that it is visible that you can take the lids off. marking out on the side how far down I had to cut off and using a square to make sure I'm cutting to the sam level all the way across

This is the prototype so far in the project, we have attached the samples to the top lid and to the inside of the box so they do not get lost from the box. we used black string into attach then so it draws the eye to the material. We put a leaflet in the bottom lid so people using it can learn a bit about the materials in the box and where they can be found in the museum.

Preparing for the exhibition by finding some plinths to display our work on. Sanding the paint off so it is smooth with a nice shiny layer of glossy black metal paint. we also experimented with the positioning of the plinths under the table, trying to get it suitable and stable.

Experimenting with layout for the exhibition and see what fits in best were.

This is the layout of the exhibition in the Holburne Museum. we have two plinth either side if the neck space and a table in front of the window. Each group has a space of a plinth or either side of the table with an informal board. We put the colour on the bottoms of each plinth, in the info board and behind the process clip boards so there is a colour in uniform throughout.

We also got the cabinet to display what was going to go in the shop. This cabinet will be in the hallway so people who are walking into the museum will be able to see whats in the shop before that walk in. There is also the colour in this so they know the exhibition and the shop relate.
